Women’s Community Stands with Sandra, Endorses Fluke for State Senate

California NOW, LA City Councilmember Nury Martinez and NARAL President Ilyse Hogue Endorse Sandra Fluke for State Senate

Los Angeles- April 28, 2014 –California State Senate candidate Sandra Fluke (SD-26) today received a powerful trio of endorsements from national, statewide and local women leaders. California NOW, Los Angeles City Councilmember Nury Martinez — who is the only female elected official in all of Los Angeles City government — and NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue all emphatically endorsed Sandra Fluke.

California NOW President Patty Bellasalma said, “California NOW is proud to stand with Sandra, because Sandra is never afraid to stand for what's right. When she went toe to toe with Rush Limbaugh in 2012, we applauded her fearlessness and strength. But most importantly, we endorse Sandra for California State Senate because she’s an experienced advocate and effective fighter for policies that truly matter to the lives of women and girls. We know she’ll take that fight to Sacramento and be an incredible State Senator.”

Los Angeles City Council Member Nury Martinez said, "It is my pleasure to announce my endorsement of Sandra Fluke for State Senate. Throughout her career, Sandra has advocated for the voiceless around the nation and here in Los Angeles. We need women that are ready to lead and Sandra's perspective will be an important addition to Sacramento. Today, I'm proud to say that I stand with Sandra."

Ilyse Hogue, President, NARAL Pro-Choice America said, “I could not be more excited to endorse Sandra Fluke in her bid for State Senate. I am exceedingly impressed by Sandra's deep knowledge of the issues facing women today and her willingness to fight for what's right. Sandra has the experience and courage to be an effective State Senator and I know she will be a champion for her constituents.”

These organizations and individual leaders are on the front lines of creating progressive change, and to have their endorsements as we approach Election Day is inspiring. Fluke has previously received the endorsement of NARAL Pro-Choice California, the only pro-choice group to endorse in the SD-26 race thus far; the Women’s Campaign Fund; feminist icon Gloria Steinem; filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom; Congresswomen Janice Hahn and Louise Slaughter; State Senators Holly Mitchell, Carol Liu and Hannah-Beth Jackson; and several former members of the Los Angeles Commission on the Status of Women and the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls.

Endorsements

Sandra Fluke is a champion for California women and their families. She bravely spoke up on Capitol Hill in defense of contraceptive coverage and has been a tireless advocate in California on behalf of legislation like last year’s Abortion Access Bill (AB 154, Atkins). She is not only a pro-choice candidate, but part of a new generation of progressive leaders fighting for reproductive justice. In the Senate, Sandra will join a committed pro-choice majority. Endorsing Sandra was an obvious choice, because we know that she will be a champion and leader for reproductive rights in Sacramento. We’re so excited to help her get there.
