AFSCME Endorses Sandra Fluke

AFSCME ENDORSES SANDRA FLUKE

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees statewide and locally announce support for Fluke’s candidacy

Today Sandra Fluke was endorsed by five of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees California chapters. AFSCME California PEOPLE, AFSCME District Council 36, AFSCME Union of American Physicians and Dentists Local 206, AFSCMEEmployees of the Metropolitan Water District Local 1902 and AFSCME United Domestic Workers Local 3930 all announced their support for Fluke’s candidacy.

“On behalf of our 179,000 members, AFSCME California PEOPLE is proud to endorse Sandra Fluke for State Senate because of her commitment to creating and protecting good jobs for all California families,” said Kathryn Lybarger, Chair, AFSCME CA PEOPLE Steering Committee. “Sandra comes from a union family and has a long history of advocating for worker protections. Sandra is the kind of leader we need fighting for working men and women in Sacramento - we look forward to partnering with her on these important issues and working with her to create good jobs across the state.”

“We are proud to endorse Sandra because she understands the needs of California’s working men and women and shares our values of promoting fairness and opportunity in the workplace. We’re extremely impressed by her long history of advocating for worker protections and fighting against discrimination. Many prominent Southern California Democrats have endorsed Fluke, including U.S. Rep Janice Hahn, U.S. Rep Karen Bass, U.S. Rep Julia Brownley, U.S. Rep Tony Cardenas, State Senator Holly Mitchell, State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, California Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins, Los Angeles Councilmember Mike Bonin, Los Angeles Councilmember Nury Martinez and former Councilmember Bill Rosendahl. She has also been endorsed by influential organizations including California Firefighters, Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project, Sierra Club, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770, California Federation of Teachers, California League of Conservation Voters, California Nurses Association, California NOW, EMILY’s List, NARAL Pro-Choice California, Pride PAC and Military Mental Health Project.

This month, the Fluke campaign released a poll that shows Sandra is leading her opponent by an impressive seven point margin with an 18 percent name ID advantage. With Fluke’s lead in the polls and her continued accumulation of influential endorsements, the momentum is undeniably in her favor.

Endorsements

Sandra Fluke is a champion for California women and their families. She bravely spoke up on Capitol Hill in defense of contraceptive coverage and has been a tireless advocate in California on behalf of legislation like last year’s Abortion Access Bill (AB 154, Atkins). She is not only a pro-choice candidate, but part of a new generation of progressive leaders fighting for reproductive justice. In the Senate, Sandra will join a committed pro-choice majority. Endorsing Sandra was an obvious choice, because we know that she will be a champion and leader for reproductive rights in Sacramento. We’re so excited to help her get there.
