Lawyer Sandra Fluke rode national recognition all the way to a speaking role at the 2012 Democratic Convention, after Rush Limbaugh called her a “slut” for supporting the wider availability of birth control at a congressional hearing. She took second place in a big field vying for State Senate District 26. She beat a better fundraiser, someone with experience in the state legislature, and the race's only candidate with no party affiliation.
